THE HISTORY
At the origin of Mythologies, a creative residency in July 2023 at the Jardin d’Hélys-oeuvre, in Dordogne, not far from the places of my childhood. My bedside book is then “Beyond nature and culture”, by the anthropologist Philippe Descola.
On my return, I launch into a series of collages, very free, with the idea of constituting a sort of magical bestiary. Behind the images produced, I perceive a deep memory surfacing in my consciousness. I fumble and tinker with it all for a few days, and then, one morning when I wake up, I remember.
Every Sunday lunchtime, in the summer, my parents went for an aperitif at the Café de Paris. This ritual continued for many years, until I was around ten years old, when everything changed. I was drinking grenadine syrup, sitting quietly on the red moleskin seat. All around me, large tapestries by Jean Lurçat.
I realize today that this was my first contact with significant works of art “in real life”, well before the discovery of museums and galleries, and that these long moments spent daydreaming in contact with them have forged my artistic practice as surely as the hundreds of hours of learning the academic basics.
Mythologies is a series of sixteen paintings with various formats, “coated collages”, mounted on cardboard.
